Fitchburg is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 20,501 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 90.3 km (34.9 mi). 90.2 km (34.8 mi) of it is land and 0.1 km (0.04 mi) of it (0.11%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 20,501 people, 8,262 households, and 4,825 families residing in the city. The population density was 227.3/km (588.8/mi). There were 8,604 housing units at an average density of 95.4/km (247.1/mi). The racial makeup of the city was 82.19% White, 8.64% African American, 0.42% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.05% from other races, and 2.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.48% of the population.

There were 8,262 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.00.
